I'm covering all the major virtual machines for your benefit and this time it's all about VMWare's Fusion 11.5 virtual machine software. They're similar, but have a few different steps in the set up process.

Here's how to get VMWare's Fusion 11.5 on your Mac and then install and run Windows 10 from within your macOS operating system without having to switch hard drive partitions.

Check your system and hardware requirements

Before you get started with installation of Fusion 11.5, make sure your Mac meets the minimum system requirements for both hardware and software.

The minimum system requirements for installing and using VMware Fusion 11.5 are:

Hardware

  • All Macs launched in 2011 or later are supported (except the 2012 Mac Pro 'Quad Core' using the Intel Xeon W3565 Processor. The CPU architecture is incompatible).
  • Also supports the 2010 Mac Pro 'Six Core', 'Eight Core' and 'Twelve Core' models.
  • Minimum 4GB of RAM
  • 750MB free disk space for VMware Fusion and at least 5GB for each virtual machine

Software

  • Mac OS X 10.13 or later
  • Operating system installation media (disk or disk image) for virtual machines.
  • Microsoft Windows is not included with VMware Fusion.
  • Recommended graphics hardware for Windows DirectX 10 or OpenGL 3.3 support:
    • NVIDIA 8600M or better
    • ATI 2600 or better
    • Minimum requirements for Metal support.

Before you start: Back up your Mac

This is one of those awful mistakes that people make, thinking that they don't need to back up their Mac before doing something big. First off, you should be backing up your Mac on a regular basis, but even if you don't do so multiple times per day, you should definitely do so right now, before you continue with this guide. Seriously. Back it up.

How to run Windows 10 on Mac using Fusion 11.5

You'll need a copy of Fusion 11.5 or Fusion 11.5 Pro in order to install it on your Mac. Fusion 11.5 costs $79.99 and the pro version costs $159.99. The main differences between them is in the advanced features. The Pro version includes extra features specific for multiple-computer use. For example, if you to be able to create linked clones on different Macs or if you need to network your computers together. You can buy the full license right now or download a free 30-day trial and make your full purchase later. If you have an older version of Fusion, you can upgrade for less.

You'll also need a copy of Windows 10. You might already have a full copy or you might need to buy a copy. VMWare requires that you have a copy on a disk, drive, or an ISO image file in order to run it on your Mac.

Download Windows 10

  1. Navigate to the Microsoft Windows 10 ISO download page from your web browser.
  2. Click on Select Edition and select Windows 10.

  3. Click Confirm.

  4. Click on Select the product language and select your language.

  5. Click Confirm.

  6. Click on 64-bit Download.

  7. Click Save to start the download.

Download and install VMWare Fusion 11.5

The first step is to download Fusion 11.5. You can buy a full license right now or download the free 30-day trial to get started.

Once the program download is complete, follow these steps to install Fusion 11.5 on your Mac.

  1. Double-click on the VMwareFusion.dmg file to open it (it might be in finder or on your desktop. You can search for it in Spotlight if its not easy to find).

  2. Double-click on Double-click to Install.

  3. Click Open if prompted to confirm that you want to open the application.
  4. Click one of the options for how you want to install Fusion 11.5, either with a license key, by purchasing now, or by using the free 30-day trial.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Select whether you want to install Fusion 11.5 or Fusion 11.5 Pro if you're running a trial version.

  7. Click Continue.

  8. Enter your Mac log in credentials when prompted.
  9. Click OK.

  10. Drag the ISO Windows 10 file to the Installation Method Window.

    If you're installing from a different method, select that method and follow the steps to install.

  11. Click Continue.

  12. Tick the box for Use Easy Install. If you feel comfortable setting up the installation settings manually, uncheck the box.
  13. Create a Windows login account name and password.
  14. Enter the Windows Product Key.
  15. Select the Windows version you're using.
  16. Select the level of integration. If you want to share your Mac documents with Windows, you'll want More Seamless. If you prefer to keep Windows and Mac data separate, use More Isolated.

  17. Click Continue.

  18. Click Finish.

  19. Click Save to save this new virtual machine to your Virtual Machines folder.

After Windows finishes installing in the virtual machine, Windows 10 will pop up in a new window. It sort of looks like you're just using a new program or web browser, but you've got a virtual simulation of Windows 10, in its entirety right on your Mac!

The following installation script:

  • ...requires only VirtualBox with its Extension Pack and dependencies that can be easily installed in a single command with most open-source package managers
  • ...downloads macOS Catalina, Mojave and High Sierra directly from Apple's servers
  • ...installs macOS without modifying the original Apple binaries and without third-party bootloaders
  • ...creates a VM that is compatible with OpenCore and can be exported (with manual modifications) to KVM/QEMU for near-native performance
  • ...runs on Linux, Windows (WSL, Cygwin), and macOS

Manual installation[edit]

The manual installation requires access to the Mac App Store through an existing installation of macOS.

Create ISO Installation Media[edit]

  1. Download the macOS Installer file from the App Store[2] (OS X El Capitan and Sierra is downloadable from Apple's website).
  2. When download finishes, find the app, right-click and select 'Show Package Contents'.
  3. Inside the sub-folder Contents/SharedSupport you will find a InstallESD.dmg file.
  4. Open 'Disk Utility'
  5. Choose Images > Convert
  6. In the window, choose the InstallESD.dmg to convert and the disk type to be 'DVD/CD-R master for export'. Also choose the name for installer disk and the final destination. Then click 'Convert'.
  7. After conversion completes, you will see a .cdr file in your destination folder.
  8. Open 'Terminal'
  9. Enter hdiutil convert /Your/Path/To/YourCdrFile.cdr -format UDTO -o /Your/Path/To/macOSInstaller.iso
  10. Check destination folder. This is your file for installation in VirtualBox. There should be a .iso file extension.

Vmware Workstation For Windows

Installation in VirtualBox[edit]

  1. Open VirtualBox. Click 'new'
  2. Type the name for virtual machine and Mac OS X for type. Choose your version (if you have Mojave or Catalina, choose Mac OS X (64 bit)).
  3. Select memory size.
  4. Select 'Create Virtual Disk Now'
  5. Choose VDI for format.
  6. Select storage name and size. The size should be at least 32 GB.
  7. Go to 'Settings'
  8. Go to 'Storage' Tab
  9. In the SATA controller, click 'Add Optical Disk'.
  10. Insert the .iso file.
  11. Go to 'Display' tab.
  12. Set video memory to maximum value.
  13. Quit 'Settings'
  14. Boot by clicking 'Start'.
  15. When it boots, you will see some data being displayed.
  16. This part needs clarification - UEFI Interactive Shell loads, but nothing happens. If you use the command 'exit' you can shift to the EFI menu, but changing the settings doesn't seem to affect the progress of the UEFI Interactive Shell, which stops at the Shell> prompt.
  17. After a while, you will need to choose the language for installation. Choose your own language.
  18. Then you will be asked where to install macOS.
  19. On the upper-left corner, you will see a 'Utilities' button. Click it and select 'Disk Utility'.
  20. You will see a window with different storages on the left. Choose 'VBOX HARDDISK Media'. Note: You may have to select View/View All Devices
  21. Erase the Storage by clicking the 'Erase' button on the top.
  22. You will be prompted to enter the name for the storage. Enter your desired name and continue.
  23. Wait for the process to complete. Then quit Disk Utility.
  24. You will find a new storage media, which is like a hard disk. Choose that storage for the installation of OS X to install.
  25. After installation completes, the virtual machine will automatically shut down. Go to 'Settings'.
  26. Go to the 'Storage' section to eject the .iso file.
  27. Boot virtual machine again.
  28. Choose system language.
  29. Choose allow location or not.
  30. You will be asked to enter your Apple ID. Even if you have an Apple ID, do not enter now.
  31. Accept EULA of macOS.
  32. Restore Time Machine Backups (if you have)
  33. You will see the main page of OS X, open App Store.
  34. Enter your Apple ID and sign in...
