Basilisk II is an Open Source 680×0 Macintosh emulator developed by Christian Bauer. That is, it enables you to run 68k MacOS software on your computer, even if you are using a different operating system. However, you still need a copy of MacOS and a Macintosh ROM image to use this program.

  • For others, there's SheepShaver, a PowerPC emulator capable of running Mac OS 9.0.4 down to Mac OS 7.5.2 and there's Basilisk II, a 68k emulator, capable of running Mac OS (8.1 to 7.0). For everything older than System 7, you will need a Mac Plus emulator like Mini vMac NEW!
  • Download macOS 8.1 (I cannot provide links, but some abandonware pages has it, like winworldpc, it should be iso image). Download macOS 7 emulator, and extract '100MB - Mac OS 7.5.3 - 68k only.dsk' and 'Mac OS ROM' Copy macOS installer to your device and the another two files.

  1. Mac games

Macintosh emulation is quite hard to achieve, you'll have to try and fail a lot, and do a lot of research.

About 1000 Mac games are available on MyAbandonware, from 1980 to 2005. You will need one of these softwares to play them:

  • SheepShaver: games from mid 90s to 2005 (MacOS 8.1 to 9.0.4), follow the download links to the precompiled binaries, made available on E-Maculation forums ;
  • Basilisk II: games from 1991 to 1996 (MacOS 7 to 8.1), follow the download links to the precompiled binaries, made available on E-Maculation forums ;
  • Mini vMac: games from the 80s, although some games were still made for the emulated Mac in th early 90s.

Many old games will work fine in a SheepShaver or Basilisk II, you should only install and configure one emulator first and to run the game in it.

Complete guides for Mac emulation

Making Mac games work is quite complicated compared to DOS games. You'll have to find a Mac computer ROM to emulate a Mac computer. These ROM files are quite annoying to get, you can extract one from a working Mac, or get one for vMac here (archived), or several one with this guide at Redundant Robot. You should then follow these guides:

  • SheepShaver: setup guide on Windows, Mac or Linux ;
  • Basilisk II: setup guide on Windows, Mac or Linux ;
  • Mini vMac: setup guide on Windows.

Mac emulation is more complicated than DOS emulation, but the E-Maculation community is very helful, with tons of guides and tutorials in english. You should also read this page from Macintosh Garden.

Apple Mac OS 8 was another major overhaul of the OS from the earlier Mac OS 7. It added a new Platinum visual theme, a multi threaded Finder, better virtual memory, and many customization options. 8.5 and later require a PPC CPU. It was followed up by Mac OS 9.

Running MacOS 8 requires a supported Motorola 68K or Power PC based Macintosh (see the compatibility matrix), or one of the following emulators:

Basilisk II - Runs MacOS 7.x-8.1, emulates later color Motorola 68k based Macs.

SheepShaver - Runs MacOS 7.5.2-9.0.4, emulates a Power PC based Macintosh.
